This January we added a new business to our umbrella. TRB Tutoring and Homeschool Classes. We have grown a little and hope to continue to grow even more!
Belonging to homeschool groups on line we often see the need for classes that are taught outside the home. I understand this as I have taught our kids and it can be challenging. It’s also good to know your limits and to have some time to yourself. Stay at home parents that also homeschool have to schedule this things to have a moment to not teach and parent, even just for an hour or so.
So when we were thinking about what we could do to expand our business when we learned that the Montessori school was moving out… and the teacher in me woke up. We rented another unit just upstairs from the store, and started coming up with offerings. Currently we offer classes on Monday and Wednesday mornings for homeschoolers and tutor in the afternoons.
HOMESCHOOL CLASSES
We offer homeschool classes that are mostly student led, with some goals set by the parents. No we don’t play Mine Craft all day. lol. When we start out we talk about what they like to read and write and learn. We discuss what they want to learn or improve on in math and science. Then I set to work coming up with activities. Each class starts with a welcome and the days plan on the board. The students work independently on brain teasers, we read, we write, we listen and discuss. Currently the students are working on their final projects. After learning about simple machines and Newton’s laws, they are making cars that they will race (they have to come up with a non motor way to move their car) and then we will do a crash test (SAVE THE EGG!)
We built eclipse boxes to view the eclipse.
One of the students brought in her pet snake to show and discuss.
We played Brain Yoga while taking a little break for a novel study.
Kids learn when they are excited about what they are learning! We offer choice to help them excel and develop critical thinking…
Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of talk about farts and poop along the way.
