Greetings!
That was super awkward. So, hello. My name is Jerry Jones. My wife, Erin, and I want to thank you for visiting our website. We’re both former educators who are taking the leap into the wild world of small business ownership by opening a…bookstore? Hang on, it makes sense. When we left education, we fairly immediately leapt on the opportunity to follow our retirement dream - a bookstore. We firmly believe that it makes sense because of what we’re seeing in the world around us. Increasingly, a lack of empathy is driving wedges between different segments of society. Increasingly, we refuse to see the humanity in each other.
Increasingly, these divisions are showing up in our neighborhoods, our schools, hell even our grocery stores. Yes, our focus is amplifying the literary works written by hella dope people of color and members of the queer community, but our overall goal is to build community–and, you can only do that if you develop your sense of empathy. What better way to walk in the shoes of another than to read something written by them? That’s where The Roasted Bookery exists.

For myself, books were a way to transport myself into a different world. Funnily enough, I survived middle school because I was rarely there. I spent most of my middle school career in the world of Walter Farley and Matt Christopher. Yes, you read that right. Horse books and sports books. I ain’t ashamed of it either.
I would often check a book out of my school’s library, return it after recess and get another for the evening. My reading habits matured, thankfully, as I got older but for high school and early college, I lived in these fantastical worlds between the covers of books. For me, reading was a survival tactic.

Not unlike Jerry, I used reading as a way to have an escape. I grew up with 2 channels that came through our TV if the wind was blowing in the right direction. I spent many days on our porch reading books from the library. I read Meg Mysteries and then moved to Christopher Pike and VC Andrews in middle and high school. I hated teachers telling me what I HAD to read, but found they had decent taste much later (like after the exams.)
While I’d like to think my reading habits have matured, I really enjoy YA books over adult books. Maybe I just don’t want to adult? But my taste has definitely moved into a much more diverse world and I enjoy exploring new books, sometimes to the point of reading or listening to 4 or 5 books at a time.
